This year, Human Services has helped 15 children find their forever homes through the process of adoption! This is one of their stories:

Three siblings entered foster care under heartbreaking circumstances. Their mother, struggling with substance abuse, could no longer care for them safely. Their father, battling his own challenges with alcohol, was also unable to provide a stable home. Though the children loved their parents deeply, the reality of addiction made reunification impossible.

Over the course of their time in care, the siblings moved through three different foster homes. Each transition brought new challenges, but also a growing hope that one day they would find a permanent, loving family. Eventually, the parental rights of both parents were terminated, and the search for an adoptive home began.

Extended family members, while deeply caring, were unable to adopt due to age, demanding work schedules, and a shared belief that the children deserved every opportunity for a bright future. With few options remaining, the agency turned to the children's school community, hoping to find a trusted adult who might step forward. Unfortunately, no suitable candidates emerged.

In a moment of reflection and hope, the agency asked the children to describe their vision of a "perfect family." Each child created a drawing—pictures filled with images of a mom, a dad, siblings, and dogs. These drawings weren't just art; they were heartfelt expressions of longing for safety, love, and belonging. The children shared their dreams with their social worker, who carried their hopes into the next phase of the search.

Partnering with Nexus-Kindred, the agency expanded its efforts to find a family that could bring the children's vision to life. One family, originally planning to adopt two children, was approached about the possibility of welcoming all three siblings. After thoughtful conversations and reflection, they agreed to explore the opportunity.

The agency reviewed the family's home study and found a growing alignment with what the children had envisioned. A meet-and-greet was arranged, and the children's grandfather - still a loving presence in their lives- met with the prospective parents. He felt reassured by their warmth and their commitment to maintaining the children's connections with their birth family.

The first meeting between the children and the prospective adoptive parents was filled with curiosity and cautious optimism. They talked about school, favorite toys, and hobbies. By the end of the visit, the children shared that they felt this family could be the right one.

To ensure a good fit, the agency arranged several in-person visits. These visits went exceptionally well. The children felt safe, seen, and supported. With growing confidence, they transitioned into the home, and the agency moved forward carefully, always prioritizing the children's well-being.

After 16 months, the adoption was finalized.

Today, the siblings are thriving. They are fully integrated into their new family and community, surrounded by love, stability, and opportunity. Importantly, their adoptive parents continue to support meaningful relationships with their birth relatives - honoring the children's past while building a hopeful future.

This story is a testament to resilience, partnership, and the power of listening to children's voices. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, love can find a way.

This story is just one of many. Across the country, thousands of children are in foster care, waiting for safe, nurturing homes. Many are part of sibling groups, like these three, who face the added challenge of staying together through the foster care and adoption process.

There is an urgent need for more foster care providers in our area - especially those willing to care for sibling groups, teens, and children with complex needs. Foster parents play a critical role in providing stability, love, and healing during some of the most difficult times in a child's life.

For some children, foster care is a temporary stop on the way to reunification with their birth families. For others, when reunification is not possible, the path may lead to adoption. This journey can be long and complex, but with the right support, it can also be transformative - for both the children and the families who welcome them.
